Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Many pedestrian crashes happen when someone enters a roadway unexpectedly, when a driver fails to see a pedestrian in time, or when visibility or crossing conditions are poor. Each case depends on its own facts, which investigators determine through evidence at the scene.
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Even modest increases in speed make a crash harder to avoid and increase the force of impact. Slower speeds give drivers more time to react and reduce the severity of injuries when a collision does occur.
Where do most pedestrian accidents take place?
A large share occurs on wider roads with multiple travel lanes, such as boulevards and arterial streets, where vehicles move faster, and crossing distances are longer.
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night?
Reduced visibility after dark does raise risk, but daytime crashes, like this one, are also common, particularly in areas with heavy vehicle or foot traffic.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Garland, TX
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately and stay at the scene until help arrives. Check on the injured person without moving them unless there's immediate danger, since some injuries aren't visible right away. Even if a child or adult seems alert, prompt medical evaluation is important, as symptoms of head or internal injuries can take time to appear. Write down what you saw as soon as possible, including vehicle positions and any contributing conditions, while the details are still fresh. If you're a parent or caregiver in the Garland area, this is also a good moment to talk with children about road safety and safe crossing habits near busy streets.
