Dragoon, AZ (July 22, 2026) – A good Samaritan died on Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while helping at a rollover wreck on eastbound I-10 near milepost 318, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The rollover had happened earlier that day, July 21, near Dragoon Road.
The person had pulled over to assist at the scene when another vehicle struck them. They were taken to a hospital in Willcox, where they later died.
The circumstances remain under investigation. Our condolences go out to the person’s family and loved ones.
Why Are Roadside Helpers at Risk During a Crash Response?
Stopping to help after a wreck can put a bystander in one of the most dangerous positions on a highway: standing near live traffic with limited protection. Even with hazard lights and flares, oncoming drivers may not notice a stopped vehicle or people nearby until it’s too late to react.
Distraction, speed, and reduced visibility all raise the risk for anyone outside a vehicle on a highway shoulder. A driver glancing at a phone or adjusting to nighttime or glare conditions may drift toward the shoulder without realizing someone is standing there.
Safety experts generally recommend staying inside a vehicle when possible and calling for help rather than approaching an active roadway on foot. When stepping out is unavoidable, moving well beyond the shoulder and staying alert to approaching traffic can reduce, though not eliminate, the danger involved.
