What Factors Make Highway Intersection Crashes So Dangerous in Michigan?
Intersections where local roads meet state highways in Michigan are among the most challenging spots for drivers to manage safely. Vehicles crossing a higher-speed highway often misjudge the speed of oncoming traffic, and even a brief gap in judgment can lead to a violent collision. When a crash involves multiple vehicles at one of these crossings, the chain of impacts can affect cars that had no role in the original mistake.
Multi-vehicle crashes at rural Michigan intersections frequently result in a range of injury severity among those involved. A driver or passenger in the vehicle that is struck directly tends to absorb the greatest force, while occupants of secondary vehicles — those hit as a result of the first collision — may face varying levels of risk. Road geometry, sight lines, and posted speed limits all factor into how these crashes unfold and how serious the outcomes tend to be.
