Gurnee, IL (March 28, 2026) – Two people were hospitalized following a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash on Thursday afternoon, March 26, on Route 41 in Gurnee.
Authorities said the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes just east of Delany Road. Police and fire crews arrived to find multiple vehicles involved in a rear-end collision within a single lane of traffic.
The vehicles involved included a Chevrolet Silverado, a Toyota RAV4, a Honda CR-V, a Toyota Camry, and a MINI Cooper. Officials said the initial impact appeared to occur when a vehicle struck the rear of the Toyota RAV4, triggering a chain-reaction involving the other cars.
Paramedics evaluated a total of eight people at the scene. Two occupants of the Toyota RAV4 were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, while six others declined further medical treatment.
Traffic in the area was significantly impacted, with all northbound lanes temporarily shut down except for a right turn lane as crews worked to clear the scene. The roadway was reopened shortly after 2:15 p.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and it is not yet clear if any citations will be issued.
We wish those injured a full and speedy recovery.
How Chain-Reaction Crashes Develop on Busy Roads
Chain-reaction crashes often occur when vehicles are traveling closely together, leaving little time to react when traffic suddenly slows or stops.
A single rear-end collision can quickly involve multiple vehicles, especially in high-traffic areas or at higher speeds.
Investigators typically examine the following distances, driver attention, and traffic flow to determine how the initial impact led to a larger crash.
