What Factors Can Affect Traffic Flow After a Major Highway Crash?
Arterial roads near U.S. Highway 49 and Old Highway 42 typically carry steady traffic volumes throughout the day. When a serious crash occurs in Hattiesburg, responders may restrict lanes to manage the scene and reduce the risk of further incidents.
Traffic slowdowns often develop quickly when lanes are blocked, especially on highways that serve as key travel routes. Drivers may face delays or need to take alternate paths while the roadway is cleared.
Vehicle damage, debris, and the position of the cars can all influence how long a roadway remains partially closed. In some cases, even one blocked lane can create backups that extend well beyond the crash site.
