How Smoke Inhalation Can Occur During Residential Fires
Smoke inhalation is one of the most significant dangers associated with residential fires. Even small fires can produce thick smoke that spreads quickly through a home.
Smoke consists of a mixture of hot gases, particles, and chemicals released when materials are burned. Breathing in these substances can irritate the lungs and reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the body.
People exposed to smoke may experience coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness, or irritation in the eyes and throat. In some cases, a medical evaluation is recommended to check for breathing problems or other complications.
Quick evacuation from a smoke-filled structure helps reduce the risk of breathing in harmful fumes. Ventilation and fire suppression efforts by responding crews also help clear smoke and make the environment safer once the fire is under control.
