What Can Happen During a Vehicle and Train Collision at a Railroad Crossing?
Crashes involving trains often occur at marked railroad crossings where vehicles and trains share the same intersection. Because trains travel on fixed tracks and require long distances to stop, drivers must rely on warning signals, crossing arms, and clear sightlines before proceeding.
When a vehicle enters a crossing as a train approaches, the force of impact can be severe due to the train’s size and weight. Even at moderate speeds, collisions can cause catastrophic damage to passenger vehicles.
Railroad crossings may include flashing lights, bells, or gates designed to alert drivers of an oncoming train. Obstructed views, timing misjudgments, or failure to notice signals can increase the risk of a serious crash at these intersections.
