Pittsburgh, PA (March 2, 2026) – A 25-year-old woman from Baldwin lost her life after a three-vehicle crash early on Sunday morning, March 1, on a busy Pittsburgh bridge. The collision happened around 12:52 a.m.
When emergency units arrived, they found one vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Three people inside that vehicle were trapped. Crews put out the fire and pulled out a man and a woman, who were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. A third passenger, identified as Laila Makaylea Jones, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.
What Factors Can Increase the Risk of Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Bridges?
Bridges can present unique driving challenges, especially at night. Narrow lanes, limited shoulders, and reduced visibility may leave little room for drivers to react if traffic suddenly slows or stops.
Speeding and following too closely often contribute to chain-reaction crashes. When one vehicle stops abruptly, others may not have enough distance to avoid a collision. In some cases, road surface conditions such as moisture or debris can make braking less effective.
Vehicle fires, while less common, can occur after severe impact damage. Quick response and safe driving practices, including maintaining space between vehicles, can help reduce the likelihood of serious multi-vehicle accidents on heavily traveled bridges.
