Why Leaving the Scene of an Injury Collision Has Serious Consequences
When a collision results in injuries, drivers are generally required to stop, remain at the scene, and provide identifying information. Leaving before fulfilling those responsibilities can complicate emergency care and delay the collection of information needed to determine what occurred.
Investigators frequently rely on witness statements, surveillance footage, vehicle damage, and physical evidence to identify a fleeing driver. Even if a vehicle is left behind, additional investigative work may be needed to determine who was operating it at the time of the collision. These cases can remain active until investigators establish the full sequence of events and identify everyone involved.
