Clewiston, FL (June 30, 2026) – A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene on US-27 near Francisco Street early on Sunday morning, June 28. The pedestrian was attempting to cross the travel lanes at the time of the collision.

The vehicle was traveling south on US-27 when it struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver left the area after the wreck.

The pedestrian’s identity had not been confirmed as of this report. The suspected vehicle is described as a white 1999 Ford Ranger with a toolbox in the back. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the accident to come forward.

We extend our condolences to the family of the person who lost their life.

What Happens During a Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Investigation?

When a driver leaves the scene after striking a pedestrian, investigators rely on physical evidence to identify the vehicle involved. Paint transfer, broken vehicle parts, and damage patterns can help narrow down the make, model, and even the year of the vehicle responsible. Witness descriptions of distinctive features, like a toolbox or unique paint color, can also speed up identification.

Public tips frequently play a meaningful part in solving these cases. A vehicle matching the description may be recognized by someone in the community, especially in smaller towns where certain vehicles are familiar to residents. Crime Stoppers and similar tip lines allow people to share information, sometimes anonymously, that can lead investigators to a suspect.

Identifying an unknown pedestrian can also take time, particularly when no identification is found at the scene. Investigators may use fingerprints, dental records, or missing persons reports to confirm who the person was before next-of-kin notification can occur.
