Phoenix, AZ (June 30, 2026) – A 40-year-old woman died, and another driver was hurt in a hit-and-run wreck near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road early on Sunday morning, June 28. The collision happened at approximately 6:20 a.m.

Emergency units arrived and found the adult female driver of a Toyota Camry with serious injuries. She was taken to a hospital for treatment. Officers later learned that after the initial collision, the second vehicle, a BMW, struck a female pedestrian before crashing into a fence. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition but did not survive. She was pronounced dead from her injuries.

The 24-year-old BMW driver fled the scene on foot. Detectives later located him at the home of the registered owner with serious injuries, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Once medically cleared, he is expected to be booked into jail in connection with the crash. No names have been released, and it has not been determined what led up to the accident or whether impairment played a part.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life.

What Happens When a Driver Flees the Scene of a Fatal Crash?

Leaving the scene of a serious crash adds a layer to an already complex investigation. Detectives must work to identify the fleeing vehicle and driver, relying on physical evidence left behind, such as vehicle parts, paint transfer, or debris. Registration records tied to a vehicle can also help investigators trace ownership when a driver cannot be located right away.

In many cases, a driver who flees on foot is later found through follow-up visits to addresses connected to the vehicle. This kind of detective work can take hours, especially when officers must first secure the original crash site and care for those hurt before shifting focus to locating a missing driver.

Fleeing the scene of a crash that results in injury or death typically carries serious legal consequences separate from any other charges related to the collision itself. Investigators look closely at the full sequence of events, including any additional crashes or collisions caused in the process of fleeing.
