What Happens When a Vehicle Strikes the Rear of a Semi Truck?
Rear-end collisions with semi trucks result in more severe outcomes than crashes between two passenger vehicles. A semi’s height and trailer structure can cause a smaller vehicle to slide partially underneath on impact, which significantly increases the risk of serious or fatal injury for the occupants of the smaller car. This type of crash is sometimes referred to as an underride collision.
Investigators looking into this kind of crash typically review several factors, including the speed of the passenger vehicle, visibility conditions, and whether the semi was stopped, slowing, or moving at the time of impact. Lighting and reflective markings on the trailer are also commonly examined, since visibility plays a major role in a driver’s ability to react in time.
Early morning hours can present unique visibility challenges for drivers, with reduced light and the potential for fatigue affecting reaction times. These conditions are considered when reviewing crashes that occur during this period.
