Newark, NJ (June 22, 2026) – Two women died after a hit-and-run crash Saturday night, June 20, near Park Avenue and North 7th Street in Newark. The collision happened as the women were crossing the street.
The women were identified as 58-year-old Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran of Elizabeth and 61-year-old Maria Isabel DeLosAngeles Salgado Ayala of Newark. Both were taken to a hospital, where they died.
The two friends had just left a World Cup watch party before they were hit in a crosswalk. Surveillance video showed a red sedan striking the women before leaving the area.
The police later identified the driver as 26-year-old David Zapata-Vera. He surrendered on a later date. Investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the wreck.
