What Are the Risks of Walking Outside Marked Crosswalks in Honolulu?
Pedestrian safety is a significant concern on busy roads throughout Honolulu, particularly on high-traffic corridors like Kapiolani Boulevard. Marked crosswalks are designed to give pedestrians a designated and more visible place to cross, where drivers are expected to yield. When someone crosses outside of these marked zones, they are much harder for approaching drivers to anticipate, especially at night.
Speed is a well-documented factor in pedestrian crash outcomes. At higher speeds, a driver has less time to react to a person in the road, and the force of impact increases significantly. Even on roads where pedestrian activity is common, crossing outside designated areas carries a much greater risk of serious injury.
