Why Roadside Stops on Highways Can Be Extremely Dangerous
Stopping along a highway places people close to fast-moving traffic with little protection. Even when vehicles are pulled to the shoulder, passing drivers may have limited time to react.
Nighttime conditions can increase risk. Reduced visibility, weather, and snow buildup can make it harder for drivers to see people outside vehicles.
Clearing snow or checking a vehicle may seem brief, but exposure to traffic remains high. Tractor-trailers require longer distances to slow down or move away from obstacles.
These incidents often highlight the dangers of being on foot near active travel lanes, especially during winter weather and low-light hours.
