Fayette County, WV (May 25, 2026) – One person was taken to a hospital after a collision involving a tractor-trailer and a minivan along Interstate 77 northbound near the Mossy exit Monday morning. Traffic was diverted to Exit 60 while part of the highway remained blocked for several hours.
Emergency units worked to clear the roadway as drivers experienced heavy backups through Fayette County. By midday, the left lane had reopened, and traffic had started moving again. The people involved had not been publicly identified as of Tuesday.
Work to determine what led to the collision was still underway Tuesday afternoon. We are keeping the injured person and their loved ones in our thoughts during recovery.
Why Traffic Delays Often Follow Large Truck Highway Emergencies
Highway backups can last for hours when large commercial vehicles are involved in roadway emergencies. Tractor-trailers are much heavier than passenger vehicles, which can make cleanup and vehicle removal more difficult. Even minor roadway damage or spilled cargo may require crews to slow traffic while lanes are inspected and cleared.
Traffic diversions are also common when lanes become blocked. Drivers may be rerouted through nearby exits until travel lanes can safely reopen. Congestion often continues even after part of the highway is restored because traffic flow takes time to return to normal. Weather, visibility, and roadway design can also affect how quickly vehicles move through the backup. In many cases, transportation workers must coordinate towing operations and lane inspections before all travel lanes can reopen safely.
