Houston, TX (May 10, 2026) – Two people were injured Sunday afternoon after a train collided with a vehicle in northeast Harris County, according to local emergency officials.
The crash occurred on Lockwood Road near North Sam Houston Parkway East and the area of Summer Creek High School.
First responders said the railroad crossing warning arms were activated and lowered when a vehicle reportedly drove through the crossing and into the path of an oncoming train traveling at approximately 60 mph.
The train struck the vehicle, causing significant damage and prompting a large emergency response.
Sheldon Community Fire and Rescue confirmed that two individuals were transported to area hospitals following the collision. Authorities stated that the driver suffered serious injuries.
Officials also reported that the train conductor attempted to assist after the crash but encountered several alligators in nearby water while trying to reach the scene. The identities of those involved have not yet been released. Investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims, and we wish them a full recovery.
Railroad Crossing Safety and Train Collision Risks
Train-versus-vehicle collisions frequently result in severe injuries due to the massive size and speed of locomotives, which require substantial distance to safely stop. Even when warning systems such as flashing lights and crossing arms are activated, drivers sometimes attempt to cross tracks before trains arrive, creating extremely dangerous situations.
Railroad safety officials continue urging motorists to obey all crossing signals and never attempt to drive around lowered crossing gates. Trains traveling at highway speeds may appear farther away than they actually are and are often unable to stop quickly enough to avoid a collision.
Emergency crews responding to train crashes can also face hazardous environmental conditions near rail corridors, including difficult terrain, standing water, and wildlife encounters.
