Motorcycle Crashes on Interstate Highways
Motorcycle crashes on interstate highways can result in serious injuries due to high travel speeds and limited protection for riders. Unlike enclosed vehicles, motorcycles offer no structural barrier between the rider and the road, making the consequences of a collision at highway speeds particularly severe.
Busy highway interchanges and merging areas can create dangerous conditions for motorcyclists as traffic patterns shift rapidly and visibility may become limited. Drivers entering or exiting the highway may not always see a motorcycle in their blind spot, and sudden lane changes or abrupt braking can leave riders with little time to react.
Emergency crews often shut down lanes temporarily to assist injured riders and safely clear crash scenes. When lane closures occur on heavily traveled interstates, secondary crashes can become an additional concern as approaching drivers adjust to shifting traffic conditions.
