Romulus, MI (May 10, 2026) – A Michigan State Police trooper was injured Sunday morning after a semitruck rear-ended a patrol vehicle along Interstate 94 in Romulus, according to authorities.
The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on eastbound I-94 near Merriman Road while troopers were assisting with a temporary interstate closure for a cable crossing operation.
Officials said two troopers were seated in separate patrol vehicles with emergency lights activated while blocking the right and center lanes of traffic. During the operation, a semitruck driven by a 59-year-old man from Ontario, Canada, struck the rear of one of the patrol cars.
Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said the trooper involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The semitruck driver was cited following the crash, though officials have not released additional details regarding the citation.
Authorities used the incident as another reminder for motorists to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along roadways. The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured trooper, and we wish them a continued recovery.
Move-Over Laws and Emergency Vehicle Safety
Crashes involving emergency vehicles stopped on highways continue to pose serious risks for first responders working traffic incidents, construction zones, and roadway operations. Move-over laws are designed to protect police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and highway workers by requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights.
Despite these laws, rear-end crashes involving patrol vehicles and service units remain common on busy interstate corridors. Limited visibility, distracted driving, fatigue, and failure to reduce speed are frequently contributing factors in these incidents.
Transportation and law enforcement officials continue urging drivers to remain alert and provide adequate space for emergency crews operating along roadways. Investigators will continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the I-94 patrol vehicle crash in Romulus.
