Phoenix, AZ (July 26, 2026) – Four people were taken to a hospital on Friday night, July 24, after a driver reportedly ran a red light near 19th Avenue and Interstate 17, striking a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office inmate transport vehicle.

According to available information, the transport vehicle was carrying inmates when the other driver entered the intersection and hit it. Three inmates and one deputy were taken to a hospital for evaluation. All injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

No names or additional details about those involved had been released at the time of publication.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation as officials continue to gather more information.

We hope everyone involved makes a full and speedy recovery.

Why Red-Light Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous

Red-light crashes usually occur at intersections where vehicles are traveling in different directions, increasing the chance of side-impact damage. These types of collisions can involve passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, emergency vehicles, or specialty transport units, depending on traffic conditions.

After a crash at an intersection, investigators typically review traffic signal timing, vehicle positions, witness statements, and any available surveillance or dashboard camera footage. Road conditions, visibility, and driver actions are also examined to help determine how the sequence of events unfolded. Medical evaluations may provide additional information about the extent of injuries, while vehicle damage can offer insight into the impact force and direction. As more evidence becomes available, investigators can develop a clearer picture of what occurred.

2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
