How Alcohol or Drug Impairment Affects Driving Ability?
Impairment can significantly reduce a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Alcohol and certain drugs may slow reaction times, affect judgment, and make it harder to recognize hazards. Even small amounts can interfere with decision-making and increase the likelihood of serious roadway collisions.
Drivers who are impaired may struggle to maintain proper lane position, judge distances accurately, or react to changing traffic conditions. These limitations can become even more dangerous during overnight hours when visibility is reduced, and fatigue may already be a factor. Because of these risks, impairment remains a leading factor in many fatal traffic crashes across the United States.
Public safety campaigns emphasize planning, using designated drivers, and avoiding driving after consuming substances that can affect alertness. These measures help reduce preventable deaths and serious injuries on roadways.
