Independence, MO (April 27, 2026) – A 2-year-old child died after being struck by a vehicle on Saturday, April 26, in the 800 block of Concord Road. The crash was reported around 2:12 p.m.
The child was riding a scooter when a 2017 Cadillac XT5 backed out of a parking spot and hit the toddler. Emergency units took the child to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The child was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
A preliminary review of the incident indicates the Cadillac was in the process of backing up when the child entered its path. The full cause of the crash is still being determined.
The incident remains under review by authorities. Our sincere condolences go out to the child’s family and loved ones.
What Makes Backing Vehicle Accidents So Dangerous for Young Children in Missouri?
Young children are especially vulnerable to backing vehicle accidents because of their small size and how difficult they can be to see from inside a vehicle. Many standard vehicles have significant blind zones directly behind them, and children on foot or on small riding toys can fall entirely within that unseen space. This is a known risk in parking lots, driveways, and residential streets across Missouri and the rest of the country.
Toddlers move quickly and unpredictably, which makes it harder for drivers to anticipate their path. A child on a scooter or bike can enter a vehicle’s path in seconds, leaving almost no time for a driver to react. Rear visibility aids such as backup cameras have become standard on newer vehicles, though they do not eliminate the risk entirely when a child moves into the zone at the last moment.
