Indianapolis, IN (January 29, 2026) – An Indiana State Police trooper was injured on January 29 after his patrol car was struck by another vehicle while he was assisting at the scene of a previous crash on I-70, just west of the Plainfield exit.
According to State Police Sgt. John Perrine, the trooper was seated inside his vehicle at the time of the impact, positioned behind the original crash to shield the scene. A separate vehicle lost control and collided with the rear of the patrol car with significant force. The trooper sustained injuries in the crash but is expected to be okay, according to officials.
The incident highlights an ongoing trend in the Indianapolis area. Sgt. Perrine noted that in the past five days alone, Indiana State Police have investigated over 500 crashes throughout the region—none of which had road conditions listed as the primary cause. Instead, authorities are pointing to driver behavior, including speed and inattention, as the leading factors.
The crash remains under investigation. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance, and stay alert, particularly near active crash scenes or when emergency vehicles are present.
We extend our support to the injured trooper and wish them a smooth and full recovery.
