Los Angeles, CA (July 20, 2026) – A multi-vehicle traffic collision with injuries occurred on the eastbound State Route 60 near the Whittier Boulevard off-ramp on July 18 after several vehicles became involved in a chain-reaction sequence.

According to CHP preliminary dispatch information, the first reports came in around 4:07 a.m. when callers reported multiple vehicles colliding and blocking every eastbound lane. Initial reports identified a black Honda Civic and a gray Honda among the vehicles involved. Moments later, additional callers stated that more vehicles had become involved as traffic continued to build.

Dispatch records indicate one driver had been changing a tire when another vehicle struck the disabled car. A subsequent update noted that as many as four vehicles may have been involved, including a Toyota Tacoma, a Nissan Sentra, and an unidentified vehicle. A semi-truck was also reported to be connected to the collision sequence. Emergency units temporarily held all lanes while tow trucks were requested to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the roadway.

The extent of any injuries has not been released, and the identities of those involved were not immediately made public. The cause of the collision remains under review as investigators continue gathering information.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and we hope those involved make a full recovery.

Why Secondary Collisions Are Common on Busy Freeways

Chain-reaction crashes usually develop on heavily traveled freeways when drivers have little time to react to hazards ahead. A disabled vehicle, sudden lane blockage, or unexpected stop can quickly lead to additional vehicles becoming involved, particularly during overnight or early morning hours when visibility may be reduced.

Motorists can help lower the risk of secondary collisions by slowing down near disabled vehicles, maintaining a safe following distance, and remaining alert for changing traffic conditions. California’s Move Over law also requires drivers to change lanes or reduce speed when approaching stopped vehicles displaying emergency lights whenever it is safe to do so. Taking these precautions helps protect stranded motorists, roadside workers, and everyone traveling through the area.
