What Is Examined After a Fatal Residential Fire?
After a deadly home fire, investigators regularly study where the flames began and how they moved through the building. Burn patterns, electrical wiring, appliances, and heating equipment may provide useful information.
Smoke alarms and available exit paths may also be reviewed. The layout of the home can affect how quickly smoke spreads and whether occupants can reach a doorway or window.
Medical findings may help clarify whether heat, smoke inhalation, or another factor caused the death. Photographs, debris, and witness accounts can add further context. Weather and nearby fuel sources may also matter when determining how rapidly the fire grew and which parts of the structure were affected.
