Why Leaving the Scene of an Injury Crash Can Lead to Serious Consequences
A driver involved in a traffic collision that results in injuries is generally required to stop and remain at the roadway while exchanging information and providing reasonable assistance if it is safe to do so. Leaving before meeting those obligations can result in criminal charges and may make it more difficult to determine exactly what happened.
Investigators usually review vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness statements, surveillance footage, and any available dash camera recordings to establish the sequence of events. They may also examine whether speeding, impairment, distraction, or other driving behaviors contributed to what occurred. As additional evidence is collected, more information about the people involved and the circumstances surrounding the case may be released.
