Why Vehicle Entrapment Can Occur in Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes
Vehicle entrapment can occur when a vehicle’s structure is damaged in a crash. When several vehicles collide at highway speeds, the force of impact can bend doors, crush frames, or overturn vehicles, making it difficult for occupants to exit on their own.
These situations are more likely during freeway crashes, where traffic moves quickly and vehicles travel close together. A sudden stop or a lane change can trigger a chain reaction involving several cars within seconds.
Overturned vehicles can further complicate the scene. When a vehicle rolls onto its side or roof, occupants may be restrained by seat belts or blocked by damaged parts of the car. In these situations, specialized tools are often used to create safe access so trapped occupants can be removed.
