Why Stop Sign Intersections Can Lead to Serious Crashes
Intersections controlled by stop signs depend heavily on drivers observing right-of-way rules. When a vehicle fails to stop fully before entering the intersection, it can place crossing traffic at risk of a sudden collision.
Crashes at these locations often involve vehicles traveling in perpendicular directions. If one driver proceeds without stopping, the other may have little time to react, especially at normal roadway speeds.
These collisions can also involve additional vehicles if the first impact pushes one vehicle into another lane. The combined force from multiple vehicles can increase damage and raise the risk of severe injury or death for those involved.
