Jackson Co, MO (January 22, 2026) – A tragic collision between an SUV and a tractor-trailer resulted in a fatality on Wednesday afternoon on eastbound I-70, just west of Woods Chapel Rd in Jackson County.
The crash took place at approximately 2:32 p.m. when a 2014 BMW X3, driven by a 28-year-old man from Independence, struck the rear towed unit of a 2020 Volvo tractor-trailer. Both vehicles were traveling eastbound at the time of the crash. The impact caused catastrophic damage to the BMW, which was later towed from the scene by Elite Tow.
Emergency responders from the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District arrived within minutes. Tragically, the driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:39 p.m. by a responding paramedic. His identity has not been made public, but next of kin were notified.
The driver of the Volvo, a 38-year-old man from Hollywood, CA, was wearing a seatbelt and was not reported injured. His vehicle sustained moderate damage and was removed by Santa Fe Tow.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed this incident as Troop A’s fourth fatal crash and fourth fatality of 2026. Members of the Major Crash Investigation Unit, along with Blue Springs Police, assisted in the on-scene investigation, which caused extended delays on the interstate throughout the afternoon.
