Why Hillcrest Areas on Rural Highways Can Increase Crash Risks
Crashes near hill crests on rural highways can occur when drivers have limited visibility of approaching traffic beyond the crest. Vehicles traveling in opposite directions may have less time to react if another vehicle enters their path after cresting the roadway.
Investigators often examine lane positioning, vehicle speed, and sight distance in these types of crashes. The slope and design of the roadway may also affect how quickly drivers can identify hazards ahead.
When two vehicles leave the roadway after impact, investigators typically review tire marks, shoulder conditions, and damage patterns to better understand the sequence of events. Medical findings and occupant positions inside the vehicles may also help explain how injuries occurred during the collision.
