Jefferson County, KY (April 21, 2026) – Two separate ramp crashes caused major traffic disruptions on Tuesday, April 21, along US-42 near KY 841 North and Interstate 265 North in Jefferson County.
Emergency units were called to the KY 841 North ramp to US-42 after a crash blocked the left shoulder and the left two lanes. Shortly after, another crash was reported on the Interstate 265 North ramp to US-42, also blocking the left shoulder and two left lanes of traffic.
Both incidents impacted the same general corridor, leading to slowdowns as vehicles were forced to merge into limited open lanes. No confirmed information on injuries has been released at this time, and the number of vehicles involved in each crash has not been detailed.
Authorities continue to investigate both crashes.
Our thoughts are with those involved.
How Ramp Crashes Can Disrupt Highway Traffic Flow
Ramp areas connecting highways often experience heavy congestion because vehicles are merging, exiting, or changing speeds within a short distance. When a crash occurs in these zones, it can quickly reduce available roadway space and force traffic into fewer lanes.
Even partial blockages, such as a closed shoulder or blocked lanes, can create delays that extend onto nearby highways. Drivers approaching ramp connections may face sudden slowdowns, especially during peak travel periods. Maintaining distance and adjusting speed early can help reduce the risk of secondary incidents in these congested merge areas.
