Johnston County, OK (February 20, 2026) – Two Tishomingo teens were injured on Wednesday evening after being struck by a vehicle on S Bullard Chapel Rd near E Hankins Ln. The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on February 18, according to reports.
Authorities said 16-year-old John Campbell was riding a skateboard and 18-year-old Ethan Hooper was riding a bicycle. Both were traveling north along the roadway when a northbound vehicle hit them.
Ethan’s mother, Marci Hooper, said her son called her shortly after the crash and asked to be taken to the hospital. When she arrived, she found John unconscious in the road. She said Ethan later lost consciousness while she was holding him.
Campbell was taken to OU Medical Center, where he was admitted in critical condition. Hooper was taken to Mercy Hospital in Ardmore. He was treated and later released. The driver of the vehicle, 65-year-old Coy Lawing of Tishomingo, was also reported injured, though details about his condition have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with those injured as they continue to recover.
Safety Concerns for Pedestrians and Cyclists on Rural Roads
Crashes involving pedestrians, skateboarders, and bicyclists on rural roads can lead to severe injuries due to limited lighting and narrow shoulders. Many county roads do not have sidewalks or marked bike lanes, which can increase the risk for people traveling alongside traffic.
Even during early evening hours, visibility may begin to decrease, especially in areas without streetlights. Drivers and those on foot or wheels must share the roadway carefully. Wearing reflective clothing and using lights on bicycles can help improve visibility.
Speed limits on rural roads are often higher than in residential neighborhoods. This can reduce reaction time for drivers and increase the force of impact during a crash. Communities sometimes review road design, signage, and lighting after serious incidents to help reduce future risks for everyone who uses the roadway.
