Kansas City, MO (April 1, 2026) – Four people were injured in an overnight crash on Tuesday when a car collided with the back of a semi-truck on northbound U.S. 71.
The crash occurred shortly before midnight near 19th Street. Authorities said a silver Mercedes S55 was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a Freightliner semi-tractor traveling without a trailer.
The impact caused the Mercedes to catch fire and come to a stop in the middle of the highway. The force of the collision also spun the semi across two lanes before it came to rest on the left shoulder.
Emergency units transported the driver and front-seat passenger of the Mercedes to area hospitals with critical and serious injuries. The semi driver and passenger were also taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. As of Wednesday morning, the Mercedes driver remained in critical condition.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
High-Speed Rear-End Collisions and Their Risks
Rear-end crashes at high speeds can be particularly severe due to the sudden transfer of force from one vehicle to another. When a passenger vehicle strikes a heavy truck, the smaller vehicle often absorbs most of the impact, increasing the risk of severe injuries to its occupants.
High-speed impacts can also cause fires, vehicle spin, and loss of control, affecting surrounding traffic and increasing the chance of secondary collisions. Emergency crews prioritize rapid response to secure the scene, extinguish fires, and provide medical care to all involved.
Seatbelts and proper restraint systems remain the most effective means of reducing injury severity in such high-impact collisions.
