How Icy Roads Affect Vehicle Control on Highways
Winter road conditions can quickly change driving safety, especially on high-speed highways. Ice reduces tire traction, making it easier for vehicles to slide, spin, or drift into other lanes. Even small steering or braking movements can lead to loss of control when surfaces are slick.
Bridges, shaded areas, and open rural highways often freeze first because of exposure to wind and cold air. Drivers may not see black ice, which forms a thin, nearly invisible layer on the pavement.
Slowing down, increasing following distance, and avoiding sudden movements can help reduce risk in icy conditions. Using winter tires or maintaining good tread depth can also improve grip and stability when roads become hazardous.
