Morrisville, NC (February 25, 2026) – Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire that damaged a building at the Camden Westwood apartments off Chapel Hill Road on Monday, February 23. Emergency units responded to the complex around 6:15 p.m. after reports of flames on the third floor of a building with about 30 units.
Crews brought the fire under control and stayed at the scene overnight to put out remaining hotspots. Five people were treated at the scene for injuries. A sixth person was taken to the burn unit at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, though their condition has not been released.
Around 70 residents were displaced by the fire. Aid groups and property management assisted those who cannot return home. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those hurt as they recover.
What Happens After a Large Apartment Building Fire?
When a fire damages a multi-unit apartment building, the impact often extends beyond the visible damage. Residents may be forced to leave quickly, sometimes with little more than what they can carry. Temporary housing, food, and clothing support are often arranged through local aid groups and property managers.
Medical care is another concern. People exposed to smoke or flames may need treatment right away, while others may notice symptoms hours later. Burn units at regional hospitals are equipped to handle serious cases.
Investigators typically examine the point where the fire began, along with electrical systems, appliances, and witness accounts. Their findings can help clarify how the fire started and whether safety systems functioned as intended.
