What Can Lead to Same-Direction Highway Collisions
Crashes involving vehicles traveling in the same direction often happen when traffic flow changes suddenly. Drivers may need to slow down quickly due to congestion, turning vehicles, or road features like intersections and access points.
Rear-end and side-swipe impacts are common in these situations, especially if following distances are short. Even a brief lapse in attention can reduce the time available to react to a slowing vehicle ahead.
Highways that pass through towns or connect to local roads may see a mix of speeds and turning movements. This can increase the likelihood of conflicts between drivers, particularly when multiple vehicles are moving closely together.
