La Jolla, CA (January 24, 2026) – An accident involving an electric scooter left a man with serious injuries Friday afternoon in the La Jolla area of San Diego. The crash occurred on January 23 in a parking lot off Genesee Ave, near a local bowling alley, and prompted emergency transport to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
Medics from San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to the scene and treated a 50-year-old man who had reportedly been riding a foldable electric scooter at approximately 10 miles per hour when he flew over the handlebars and landed face-first on the pavement. Bystanders reported that the man lost consciousness for about three minutes following the fall. He sustained significant facial injuries, including two broken or missing front teeth and visible blood loss.
Despite wearing a helmet, the impact was concentrated on the man’s face. Emergency responders noted signs of confusion and repetitive questioning, and while the man was oriented to his identity and city, he was unsure of the current month. His vital signs showed sinus tachycardia with a heart rate of 118, and paramedics placed him under modified spinal precautions due to the mechanism of injury.
The patient was transported to Scripps La Jolla as a trauma resource. Medical personnel confirmed he had alcohol in his system but showed no signs of spinal trauma or external head bleeding aside from facial injuries.
The incident occurred in a commercial parking lot off Genesee Ave. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the crash or whether other parties were involved.
Our thoughts are with the injured man as he receives treatment and begins his recovery.
