Lafayette County, MO (May 16, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash involving three tractor-trailers caused serious injuries Thursday afternoon along Interstate 70 in Lafayette County.
According to crash reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 1:25 p.m. on westbound I-70 near mile marker 35.8.
Investigators said a 2024 Peterbilt tractor-trailer struck the rear of a stopped 2015 Mack tractor-trailer in traffic. Following the impact, the Mack overturned and collided with the tow unit of a third vehicle, a 2005 Kenworth tractor-trailer.
The driver of the Mack, a 50-year-old man from Columbia, Missouri, suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was airlifted by Life Flight to Research Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities said the Peterbilt and Mack both sustained total damage and were removed from the scene by towing services. The Kenworth sustained moderate damage but was able to be driven from the scene.
Multiple agencies assisted at the crash site, including the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and Odessa Police Department. The incident remains under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we hope for his full recovery.
Tractor-Trailer Crashes on Interstate Highways
Crashes involving commercial vehicles on interstate highways can create dangerous conditions due to the size and weight of tractor-trailers. Rear-end collisions involving stopped traffic may lead to rollovers, secondary impacts, and extended roadway closures.
Drivers are encouraged to remain alert for slowing traffic, maintain safe following distances, and reduce speed in congested highway areas. Commercial drivers especially face increased risks when traffic conditions change suddenly on busy interstate corridors.
