Why Left-Turn Crashes Often Create Serious Motorcycle Accidents
Crashes involving motorcycles frequently occur when another vehicle turns left across traffic. These incidents often happen at intersections or driveways where drivers must judge the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles.
Motorcycles can appear smaller than other vehicles, which may make them harder for drivers to notice. Even a brief delay in seeing an approaching motorcycle can lead to a dangerous situation when a driver begins a turn.
Motorcyclists are also more exposed than people inside cars or trucks. Without the protection of a vehicle frame, airbags, or seatbelts, riders face a greater risk of serious injury in a crash. Helmets and protective clothing can help reduce injuries, but impacts at roadway speeds still create significant danger.
Left-turn crashes remain among the most commonly reported motorcycle accident types, particularly on busy highways and rural connector roads.
