Why Nighttime Pedestrian Collisions Often Lead to Serious Harm
Pedestrian collisions that happen after dark often lead to severe injuries because drivers have less time to see people walking near traffic. Reduced visibility can make it harder to notice someone crossing the road, especially on highways or poorly lit stretches of pavement. Rain, glare from headlights, and fast-moving traffic can also increase danger during nighttime travel.
Road design may affect pedestrian safety as well. Areas without sidewalks, marked crossings, or traffic signals can leave people walking close to moving vehicles. Clothing color may also influence visibility after sunset, especially if a person is wearing dark materials. In many cases, investigators later review lighting, weather, vehicle speed, and roadway layout to help piece together how the collision happened.
