The Added Dangers of Roadway Crashes After Dark
Driving after dark can make vehicles, pedestrians, lane markings, and roadside hazards harder to see. Headlight glare may also affect depth perception, especially near intersections with several businesses or driveways.
Traffic may be lighter at night, but reduced visibility can leave drivers with less time to recognize an unexpected movement. Turning vehicles, changing signals, and cars entering from nearby properties may create several points of conflict within a small space.
Lighting, travel speed, weather, and road design can influence injury severity. Medical evaluations may be needed because soreness, dizziness, or other symptoms can appear later. Temporary lane restrictions may also be necessary while patients are checked, vehicles are moved, and debris is cleared from the pavement.
