Pinole, CA (August 10, 2026) — A fatal motorcycle collision occurred on the westbound I-80 near the Pinole Valley Road off-ramp late on Saturday, August 8.

California Highway Patrol dispatch records show the incident was first reported around 11:34 p.m. Initial calls described a motorcycle and another vehicle, with the rider and motorcycle down in the freeway lanes.

Emergency medical personnel were requested as officers responded. Dispatch updates later on described several vehicles stopping near the scene and roadway hazards developing while traffic was being controlled. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this loss.

Where the Collision Happened: Westbound I-80 Near Pinole Valley Rd

The crash area was identified on the westbound I-80 just east of the Pinole Valley Road off-ramp. Dispatch records also referenced the transition from SR-4 to westbound I-80 as officers managed traffic around the scene.

Freeway transition and exit areas can involve vehicles changing lanes while other traffic continues along the main route. When an incident occupies active lanes, traffic control may extend beyond the immediate point of impact to keep approaching drivers away from the scene.

What We Know

  • The crash was reported at approximately 11:34 p.m. on Saturday.
  • CHP classified the incident as a fatality.
  • A motorcycle and another vehicle were involved in the initial crash report.
  • Later dispatch entries referenced a black Ford Maverick and a dark sport motorcycle.
  • A reporting party told CHP that dash-camera footage of the collision was available.
  • Several vehicles were reported stopped in or near freeway lanes.
  • CHP shut down both lanes of the SR-4-to-westbound-I-80 transition during the response.

Why Nighttime Motorcycle Crashes Can Create Added Freeway Hazards

Motorcyclists have far less physical protection than occupants of enclosed passenger vehicles. On an interstate late at night, the time available to recognize a rider, a stopped vehicle, or an unexpected obstruction can also be limited as traffic approaches at freeway speeds.

A serious motorcycle crash can create hazards beyond the first impact when vehicles or debris remain in travel lanes. That makes scene protection and traffic control especially important while emergency personnel reach the rider and investigators preserve evidence.

How This Crash Is Investigated

Dash-camera footage may be particularly useful in reconstructing this I-80 collision because a witness specifically reported having video of the crash. Investigators can compare that recording with vehicle damage, debris locations, lane positions, and statements from people who were at the scene.

CHP may also use the final positions of the motorcycle and other vehicles to establish the sequence of contact. Because the first dispatch reports changed as officers arrived and assessed the freeway, the completed collision report may provide a clearer account than the initial calls.

What to Do After a Fatal Collision

Family members and other eligible parties affected by a fatal California crash may want to preserve photographs, medical or other incident records, insurance correspondence, and information about witnesses while the investigation is still developing. The completed collision report can help clarify findings that were unavailable during the initial emergency response.

For crashes investigated by the California Highway Patrol, reports are available through the CHP Crash Portal at crashes.chp.ca.gov or through a CHP 190 request by mail or in person. The collision report is CHP 555, while CHP 190 is the request form.

The online portal fee is $22. Mail and in-person requests cost $10 per 25 pages through CHP. Reports are available after the officer files them, and the portal shows when a report is ready.

Under Vehicle Code § 20012, a party of interest may include a driver, passenger, vehicle or property owner, parent or guardian, or legal or insurance representative. California collision reports are not public records and are restricted to parties of interest, with no fixed public-release window.
