Laurel, MD (March 8, 2026) – One person died after a two-vehicle crash along the southbound side of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway near Maryland Route 198.
Emergency units were dispatched to the area around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 8. Reports indicate that two vehicles collided along the parkway near the Route 198 interchange.
Officials said the driver and only occupant of the striking vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people traveling in the other vehicle were not hurt in the crash.
The collision led to the closure of all southbound lanes for several hours while crews worked at the scene. Drivers traveling through the area were diverted off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway at Route 198 and rerouted through Laurel.
Motorists were later directed to rejoin the parkway using Route 197 once traffic was redirected. By late morning, authorities confirmed that all lanes had reopened after the roadway was cleared.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why Early-Morning Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous on High-Speed Parkways
Crashes that occur during the early morning hours often happen when traffic conditions and visibility are changing quickly. Roads may be quieter, but drivers can still face risks linked to darkness, fatigue, or sudden speed differences between vehicles.
High-speed parkways can also create added challenges. Vehicles typically travel at steady highway speeds, which means even a brief moment of inattention can lead to serious collisions. Limited lighting in some areas may also affect how quickly drivers notice hazards ahead.
Road design can further influence how crashes unfold. Curves, entrance ramps, and merging lanes may require quick adjustments from drivers. When multiple vehicles enter or exit near the same interchange, sudden braking or lane changes can increase the likelihood of an accident.
