How Multi-Vehicle Intersection Crashes Are Often Reviewed
Crashes involving several vehicles at intersections can be complex because investigators must determine how each vehicle approached and entered the roadway. Traffic direction, vehicle speed, and right-of-way are commonly examined after these accidents. In collisions involving large commercial trucks, stopping distance and vehicle size may also affect the outcome.
Dry road conditions do not always prevent crashes, especially at busy highway intersections where traffic moves at higher speeds. Damage patterns on each vehicle can help show the sequence of impact and where contact first occurred. Investigators may also review traffic signals, roadway markings, and witness accounts while working to understand how the collision unfolded. In some cases, traffic backups and lane blockages can continue for several hours after the crash.
