Vehicle Ejections Often Increase the Severity of Rollover Crashes
Rollover crashes can become much more dangerous when an occupant is ejected from the vehicle. During an overturning crash, occupants may be thrown violently inside the cabin or outside the vehicle if they are not fully restrained.
Vehicles leaving the roadway can encounter curbs, embankments, or uneven ground that may trigger a rollover. Once a vehicle begins overturning, the repeated impacts can cause extensive damage and serious injuries to everyone inside.
Investigators commonly review roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and the area where the vehicle left the road to understand how the crash developed. Single-vehicle rollover crashes may also involve factors such as speed, roadway conditions, or sudden steering movements.
