Why Are Pedestrian Crashes on Highways Often So Severe?
Pedestrian accidents on major highways are often especially serious because vehicles travel at higher speeds and drivers have less time to react. Even a moment of reduced visibility in the early morning hours can make it harder to spot someone walking in travel lanes.
Road layout also affects how these crashes happen. Wide lanes, dark conditions, and limited crossing points can increase the risk for people on foot. In some cases, nearby intersections or side roads may create confusion about safe walking paths.
Scene details such as lighting, vehicle speed, lane position, and road surface conditions are often reviewed later to help build a clearer picture of how the impact occurred. Medical findings may also help explain the severity of the injuries involved.
