Loon Lake, WA (May 19, 2026) – Two men were injured Monday evening, May 18, after a head-on collision along State Route 395 about four miles south of Loon Lake, according to the Washington State Patrol. Investigators said a pickup truck traveling north crossed the center line and struck a southbound car.
Both vehicles later hit guardrails on opposite sides of the highway. The pickup came to a stop blocking both directions of SR-395, while the smaller car rested in the northbound lane. A 32-year-old Maple Valley man and a 27-year-old Kettle Falls man were identified as the drivers involved.
The Maple Valley driver was taken by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center and was cited for crossing the center line, troopers said. The Kettle Falls driver was flown to the same hospital for treatment. No additional details about the wreck were released Tuesday.
Investigators are still working to determine all factors that led up to the roadway crash. We hope those injured make a full and steady recovery.
Why Center Line Crossings Often Lead to Serious Highway Crashes
Center line crossings on highways frequently result in severe injuries because vehicles are often traveling at higher speeds in opposite directions. Even a brief distraction, fatigue, or medical problem can cause a driver to drift into oncoming traffic. On two-lane highways, there may be little time for either driver to avoid contact once a vehicle enters the wrong lane.
Road conditions, visibility, and traffic flow are also commonly reviewed after these types of crashes. Guardrails can help reduce the chance of vehicles leaving the roadway, though they may not prevent major injuries during a head-on strike. In some cases, investigators also examine whether speed, impairment, or mechanical problems contributed to what happened. Early reports usually provide only basic facts, while more information is gathered through witness statements and roadway analysis.
