Elyria, OH (June 20, 2026) – A fatal accident left a Lorain woman dead and three children injured in a crash on the Ohio Turnpike near the Gulf Road overpass in Elyria on Friday, June 19.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 28-year-old Najalee Rivera was driving a Toyota RAV4 eastbound shortly before noon when the vehicle left the right side of the roadway near milepost 146.3. The SUV struck a guardrail and overturned.

Rescue crews were called to the scene and removed Rivera from beneath the vehicle. A medical helicopter was requested to transport her for treatment, but officials said she went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the scene despite extensive lifesaving efforts.

Three children riding in the SUV, a 7-year-old boy and two girls ages 8 and 4, were also injured. They were taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased.

How Guardrail Impacts and Rollovers Can Increase Injury Risks

When a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes a guardrail, the force of the impact can sometimes cause the vehicle to overturn. Rollover crashes are among the most severe types of traffic accidents because occupants may experience multiple impacts as the vehicle rotates.

Safety experts note that seat belts are one of the most effective protections during a rollover. Proper restraint use can help keep occupants inside the vehicle’s protective structure and reduce the likelihood of ejection or other serious injuries.

Investigators examine roadway conditions, vehicle damage, tire marks, and other physical evidence when reviewing rollover crashes. These details can help determine why a vehicle left the roadway and how the sequence of events unfolded after the initial impact.
