Why Pedestrian Crashes Result in Severe Injuries

Pedestrians are especially vulnerable in traffic collisions because they have little protection from the force of an impact. Even at moderate speeds, being struck by a vehicle can lead to serious or life-threatening injuries.

Many pedestrian crashes occur at night, when visibility may be reduced for both drivers and people walking near or across roadways. Factors such as lighting conditions, traffic volume, vehicle speed, and roadway design can all affect safety.

Investigators reviewing pedestrian crashes examine where the crossing occurred, visibility at the time of the incident, and the actions of everyone involved. These details can help provide a clearer understanding of how the collision happened and what factors may have contributed.
