LOS ANGELES, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 17, 2026 — A pedestrian died on Thursday night, October 15, after being hit by a gray Honda on westbound Interstate 10 near South La Brea Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported shortly after 10 p.m., with a caller telling dispatchers that all lanes had come to a stop. Officers on scene described three lanes blocked in the area as units worked to clear the roadway.
The highway patrol requested a coroner to respond to the scene, and dispatch logs show units awaiting an estimated arrival time for the coroner later that night. A SigAlert was issued for the westbound side of the freeway, and traffic was reported backed up with a break in the flow near Crenshaw Boulevard as crews worked the scene. The vehicle involved was eventually towed, and the roadway reopened.
The circumstances that led the pedestrian into the traffic lanes have not been released. The CHP has not identified the person who died, and the investigation remains active.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night?
Reduced visibility and higher traffic speeds after dark make nighttime pedestrian crashes more common than those in daylight, particularly on freeways and other high-speed roads not designed for foot traffic.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being struck by a vehicle?
If possible, call 911, move to a safe location away from traffic, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries are not immediately apparent.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and pedestrians both share responsibility for watching for each other, especially where foot traffic does not normally occur, such as a freeway.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Los Angeles, CA
Anyone who witnesses or is involved in a pedestrian crash on a freeway should move to a safe area away from traffic lanes if able and call 911 right away. Freeways carry high speeds and poor stopping distances, so staying inside a disabled vehicle or standing in a travel lane puts everyone at greater risk. Once safe, those involved should seek medical attention, since adrenaline can mask pain from injuries that need treatment. Cooperating with CHP investigators and requesting a copy of the incident report can also help with insurance and any follow-up questions later on.
